William Marcus Staples, Jr. 84 formerly of Savannah Lakes Village entered into rest Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Hospice Care of the Piedmont, Greenwood, S.C.
Mr Staples, son of the late William M. Staples and Leota Opp Staples, was a native of Tarkio, MO. Bill served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict and retired as an electronic engineer from UNISYS Corp. He had served on research and development ships, submarines, and frigate throughout his career and his work at the the Newport News Shipyard in VA involved building and refurbishing submarines, going out on many sea trails. Throughout his career he extensively traveled in the US and to many foreign countries. In 1987, he was reassigned to Cape Canaveral FL on a research vessel making his home in Melbourne FL like a vacation stop. The last assignment was the installation of the Doppler Radar (used for weather forecasting) throughout the US, of which he was home only 55 days over a 2 1/2 year period.
Following retirement, Bill was a member of the Lincolnton United Methodist Church and served as usher, on the church council and secretary/treasurer for the men's group. Also, he was a volunteer driver for the Veterans Administration for 17 years and prepared income taxes at the McCormick Senior Center.
His great love was boating, water skiing and he loved playing bridge. He was a member of the Savannah Lakes Promenaders Square Dancing Club and volunteered at the McCormick County Community Chorus Concerts.
He is survived by his son, Mark Staples and daughter-in-law Theresa Walker; daughter, Christina LaFever and stepdaughter Lynne Smith and son-in-law Walter Smith; grandchildren, Leah Staples, Jesse Staples and Zachary Smith; great grandchildren, Naomi Skyy Staples, Lincoln Staples and Lennox Staples. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marybelle Buck , and his wife, Patricia Staples.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
