Obituary

Romie Hewett Beckum met his Lord and was reunited with his beloved wife, Edith Peeler Beckum on July 30th, 2023 at the age of 90 years old.

Romie was born on June 5, 1933 in Wrens, Ga to his parents Johnny Eugene Beckum and Ethal Stapleton Beckum. He was the brother of five siblings. He was raised on a farm and worked hard from a young age.  Romie accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Reedy Creek Baptist Church then moved his membership to Woodlawn Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, was the music director and was ordained as a deacon. After they moved to Lincolnton, he joined Greenwood Baptist Church.

He was a 1952 Wrens High School graduate. Romie met Edith at a picnic and stated to his friend that “he would marry that girl one day”.  He indeed married her on June 29, 1958 which began their 58 years of marriage. Romie worked with his uncle Hewett Stapleton for a short while before joining the Air Force for 3 years serving as a fireman until he suffered a back injury and was honorably discharged. After he came home he was employed by the Wrens Police Department until 1970 when they relocated to Lincoln County, Ga so that he could take a position at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office as a deputy.  After 12 years of service he became the Lincolnton Police Chief. He retired from duty in 1991 and returned to his first love of farming with his father-in-law Lawernce Peeler. He was constantly on the go working in the yard, or visiting with his family until his health declined.  He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Sara Beckum and three infant sisters, two brothers George Beckum and Gerelle Beckum. He is survived by his daughter, Diane Beckum Dekreon (Scott), two grandchildren Michael Romie Dekreon (Alli) and Maggie Dekreon Adams (Truett), one honorary grandchild Corey Davis (Destiny) and one honorary great grandchild Autumn Davis, and a sister Edith Beckum Usry along with a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
