Mr. Bobby “Gene” Eugene Hughes, 85, of Wire Road went home to be with the Lord on April 19, 2017.
Mr. Hughes was born in Glascock County, Georgia to the late David Hughes and the late Annie Mae Dismuke Hughes. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Newsome Hughes. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BS in Education. Mr. Hughes lived in McDuffie County most of his life and was retired from Independent Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the A. J. Miller Masonic Lodge #204 and in past years was very active with the Briarwood Academy Booster Club serving as a past President. Mr. Hughes was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class. He loved hunting, fishing, cattle farming and was an avid Georgia Bulldog Fan.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Story Hughes; sons, David Hughes (Page), Mark Hughes (Michelle) and Van Hughes; step children, Keith Land (Karen), Teresa Ashcraft (Monte); grandchildren, Brice Hughes (Julie), Blake Hughes, Michael Hughes (Lacey), Kasie Hughes, Kimi Hughes and Madison Porterfield; step grandchildren, Josh Land (Terresa), Will Land, Elizabeth Land, Whitney Hillman and Kyle Dillon; great grandchildren, Hannah Grace Hughes and Ashlynn Hughes and step great grandchild, Cassie Land.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 21, 2017 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. David Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be: Terry Josey, Perry Herndon, John Dunham, Keith Land, Ricky Wood, and Josh Land. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the First Baptist Church Men’s Bible Class.
It is the family’s desire that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 1205, Thomson, GA 30824.
The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
