Lairee Rodgers Obituary

Lairee Myers Rodgers, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Quiet Oaks Nursing Home in Crawford, GA.

Born September 4, 1933, in Wilkes County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Robert James Myers and the late Jessie Mae Goolsby Myers.  She lived in Washington, GA her entire life.  She was the widow of the late Robert Wallace Rodgers to whom she was married for 50 years.

Lairee was a member of the First Baptist Church and was highly involved in community service volunteer work including blood drives, Meals on Wheels, charitable fundraising, and helping to establish the Washington-Wilkes Humane Society Animal Shelter.

She was a member of Friends of the Library, the Washington Woman’s Club, participating in Tour of Homes; and the Iris Garden Club, where she won ‘Best in State’ awards for her interpretive floral designs.

After performing with out-of-town theater companies, Lairee was a founding board member and First Vice-President of Ways and Means of the Washington Little Theater Co., where she and her husband, Wallace, worked in its early years to establish a strong community theater. Wallace designed, built, and operated the first lighting and sound systems; and Lairee performed on stage, furnished and staged theater sets, and worked at fundraising.

A gifted singer and musician, Lairee sang with a swing band quartet ensemble in the 1950’s and 60’s, and was requested to sing for religious ceremonies and private events throughout her life.

Lairee operated a catering business providing weekly meals for the Lions, Rotary, and Kiwanis Clubs, as well as catering special events for local industries.

A loving mother and grandmother, Lairee, along with her husband, Wallace, lived out their Christianity in everyday acts of kindness and compassion.  They enjoyed having a wide, diverse circle of friends and they were always willing to lend a helping hand to their neighbors and to those in need.

Always the hostess, Lairee enjoyed sharing hospitality with guests in her lovely home at 210 Water Street.  Lairee had a wonderful sense of humor and celebrated her life everyday at the wonder of her Creator and the world He had made.  She will be remembered as a kind, gracious lady who made friends easily and reached out to welcome newcomers to her beloved hometown of Washington.

She is survived by three daughters: Melissa Watlington of Helena, MT.,  Michelle Ross of Athens, GA.,  Maethea Rodgers of Yulee, FL;  a brother Jack Myers of Valdosta, GA., a sister Beverly Myers Baker of Destin Beach, FL;  four grandchildren and four great-granddaughters.

No service is planned for this time. Beggs Funeral Home, Lincolnton, GA is in charge of arrangements.
