LaVerne Smith Obituary

Mrs. Frances LaVerne Irvin Smith, 88 of Washington, Ga. entered into rest on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at Tignall House in Tignall, Ga.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 2 pm at Washington- Wilkes Memorial Gardens, Washington.

Mrs. Smith, daughter of the late Horace Edward Irvin and Arrie Aletha Young Irvin of Lithonia was born on March 13, 1933 and grew up in Lithonia where she graduated from high school and later received a degree from Southern Business University, Atlanta. On October 3, 1951, she married Herbert Lee Smith of Lithonia and they raised their family in the Atlanta area. Her husband was in real estate development for over 30 years and following his retirement, they moved to Washington, Ga.

Throughout her lifetime, LaVerne and her husband, Herbert were both active in their churches and both contributed their time greatly. She had served as the Children’s Sunday School Class teacher at Avondale Estates First Baptist Church and after moving to Washington, Ga, she joined the Washington First Baptist Church where she was also a member of the Challenge Sunday School Class.

 In addition to church, she was very involved in the community and had been a member of numerous civic organizations including charter member of Valley Hill Garden Club, Decatur, Dekalb County Federation of Garden Clubs, and Iris Garden Club, Washington. Emeritus Member of Chapter #337 O.E.S.

She was an avid gardener and other interests included photography, landscape architecture, floral designing, cooking, entertaining and having tea parties for her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Lynne Jackson, Teresa Leigh Satterfield, Patsy LaVerne Cates; sons, Herbert Kenneth Smith, and Herschel Theodore Smith; 16 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Lee Smith; sister, Alice Ophelia Ralston and brother, Charles Edward Irvin.
