Katica West Obituary

Katica Mergl West, or Kat as she liked to be called, entered into rest in the comfort of her home and surrounded with the love of her family on May 26, 2023.

She was a fiery and kindred spirit with a zest for life you find only once in a lifetime. Her laughter was contagious and her love was boundless. She was born on April 11, 1962 in Osijek, Croatia then her family relocated to Nurnberg, Germany where she grew up and spent most of her childhood. Kat started her life abroad when she moved to Georgia in 1985. She had one son, Brandon Tyler Sapp, and two daughters, Jillian Amarie Sapp and Ramona Nicole Lott which she adored more than life itself.  She raised her children in Washington, Georgia where she made lots of friends and touched the lives of everyone she came into contact with in the most special and unique way.  Kat married the love of her life, Shelton West, on June 6, 2008 in a small but intimate ceremony in Helen, GA.  Kat retired from the Wilkes County Board of Education in 2020 as a highly respected, admired, and sometimes feared Custodian by all students, faculty and staff. Kat is preceded in death by her father, Anton Mergl, and her mother, Maria Skoda Mergl.

Kat is survived by her husband, Shelton West, of Washington, GA; son, Brandon Sapp, of Tignall, GA; daughters, Jillian Crans (Jon) of Monroe, WA; Ramona Lott, of Hampton, VA; one stepson, Noah West, of North Augusta, SC and one stepdaughter, Fallon Williamson (Cameron) of Stone Mountain, GA; two sisters, Vesna Schriegel-Eggen and Ljiljana Lacaj, and one brother, Anton (Bubi) Mergl Jr. all of Nurnberg, Germany; eight grandsons, four nephews and three nieces. Kat enjoyed cooking for her family, traveling, dancing, swimming, fishing, camping and going to the beach. She was the most dedicated and doting wife, mother, and Mimi this world could offer. She will be sorely missed by her family, friends and anyone that was fortunate enough to know her.
