Mr. John Albert Johnson, Sr., 89 of McCormick, SC entered into rest on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at his residence.
Funeral services with military honors will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Ft Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, SC.
Mr. Johnson, son of the late Albert and Muriel Elizabeth Quin Johnson was born in Long Branch, New Jersey on July 22, 1932. He grew up in Long Branch and enlisted in the US Army during the Korean Conflict where he served as a demolition specialist. For most of his career, he owned and operated J&J Contracting, a successful residential construction business that he operated in both New Jersey and the Asheville, North Carolina area. In the 1980’s he retired from construction and moved to Crouse, North Carolina where he enjoyed his horse farm. His interests included deep sea fishing and hunting all types of game including bear. Throughout most of his life, he had been an RC airplane hobbyist and air show enthusiast. His patriotism was paramount and he was always honored to play taps for hundreds of veteran’s funerals until his health failed.
Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Charlene Freeswick Johnson; sons, John A. Johnson, Jr. , Jimmy Johnson of North Carolina, and Philip Johnson of New Jersey; daughters, Linda J. Arrowood of North Carolina, Mary Anne Johnson of North Carolina, Colleen Johnson of McCormick; brother, Wayne Johnson of Wyoming; sister, Alice Guentensperger of Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren and 3 great- grandchildren.
