Mr. Bowles, son of the late Walter Clarence and Nina Runion Bowles, was born on June 25, 1930 in Pearisburg, Virginia. At the age of 15, he joined the US Army during WWII but was discharged after six months when his mother informed the military that he was not old enough to enlist. When he was younger, he hauled cars and freight all over the US and later served as the president of the Teamsters Local 509 in Cayce, SC for over 25 years. He had lived in Fairview, SC before moving to Lincoln County in the early 1990’s when he purchased the property that the old Clay Hill Post Office had once operated.

He was a devout Christian who read the bible daily, was a member of New Work Baptist Church and had attended bible college in Winston Salem, NC. His hobbies included fishing, camping, quail hunting, gardening and could repair anything. Even at 90 years old, he was still very active in maintaining his property, and was always eager to learn more about all electronics including computers and smart phones. His first wife, Freda Laney Bowles, daughter, Donna Bowles Smith, grandson, Christopher Bowles and brother, Marvin Bowles, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife,  Frances T. Bowles; sons, Michael Bowles and wife Sonja of Walterboro, SC, Robert “Bobby” Bowles and girlfriend Joann Knight of Lexington, SC; daughter, Joann B. Hamilton and husband Tom of Lexington, VA; step-children, Barbara Baker and husband Chris of Greenville, SC, Regina Pendrey of Leesburg, VA, Kim Mocek and husband Steve of Black Lick, PA; his dog, Snoopy; sisters, Joyce Schrader of Ripplemead, VA, Carol Hager and husband Edison of Rich Creek, VA, Juanita Wheeler and husband Curtis of Narrows, VA, Ferne Gillispie of Pembroke, VA; son-in-law, Blaine Smith of Pelion, SC; 13 grandchildren and 6 great- grandchildren..
