George Angus Richards

George A. Richards, age 76, of Crawfordville, Ga., passed away September 16, at Greene Point Health and Rehabilitation in Union Point, Ga.

George was born in Washington, Ga, on April 10, 1944 to Harold F. Richards and Lois Arrington Richards. He and his wife, Sarah Kendall R. Richards (Kenny) were married for 45 years. He graduated from Alexander Stephens Institute in Crawfordville and was awarded an undergraduate degree from Georgia State College. He later received a Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Georgia. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Viet Nam War.

During his working life, George taught school in Norwood, Ga. His longest employment was with the U.S. Army Education Centers at Fort Bragg North Carolina, at Kelly Barracks in Stuttgart Germany and at Fort McPherson in Atlanta, Ga. He retired after 32 years of service.

George loved animals and spent most of his retirement time volunteering with the Helping Hands Humane Society. When he was first taken ill, he was caring for six rescue dogs. He also appreciated antiques and all sorts of “stuff” and was a true collector.

Survivors in addition to his wife, one sister, Martha R. Mayo (Gus), nephews, Wade H. Mayo (Kendall), Cristopher D. Mayo and Marcus F. Richards. Survivors also include: nieces, Sharon M. Moss, Julie R. House, Beth Easley, cousins, Dr. Kenneth Reeves,(Brenda), Kay Reeves, Debra A. Gunn, Fredrick Arrington (Tracy), Gordon Arrington Jr, John Richards (Sue), Connie Richards., Claude N. Richards Jr. (Margie) Surviving also are four great nieces and two great nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 10 AM, Saturday, September 19, 2020 in Crawfordville Cemetery, Crawfordville, GA with Rev. Paul Gardner officiating.

Per CDC requirements the family will be observing social distancing and masks are requested. Due to the current national health concern, the family would appreciate all phone calls, cards, texts, and e-mails.
