Charles Henry Gable, a man of faith and selfless devotion, passed away on October 7, 2023, in his hometown of McCormick, SC. Born on March 4, 1929, to the late Joseph Cott "J.C." and Sallie Mae Willis Gable, Charles was the embodiment of a true Christian gentleman and a shining example of the greatest generation that ever lived.
Growing up as the son of a sharecropper and cattle farmer, Charles learned the value of hard work at a young age. His family moved frequently, working crops for various landowners. At the age of 15, Charles began helping his father in the pulpwood business, setting the foundation for his lifelong dedication to hard work. Charles began his career as a sawyer and retired as a foreman from Millway Lumber Company in Bradley, where he served for 40 years. His belief in hard work was infectious, and he expected those around him to share his commitment.
In addition to his professional achievements, Charles was an active and faithful member of First Bethany Baptist Church. His service to the church spanned over six decades, including a 20-year term as treasurer and over 60 years as a Deacon. Charles's faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he used his talents in woodworking crafts with children attending Vacation Bible School for many years. His commitment to his faith extended to his membership in Mine Lodge #117, where he served as Worshipful Master twice over the last 50 years.
Charles was also a devoted family man, survived by his daughters Debbie Talbert and her husband Keith of Greenwood, and Kathy Cline and her husband Richard of Bradley, SC. and sister, Effie Louise Bowick of McCormick, SC. He was a loving grandfather to Chase Talbert and his wife Jesse, Catherine Talbert Jordan and her husband Tanner, Russell Cline and his wife Angel, and Rodney Cline. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Ella Talbert, Oliver Jordan, Henderson Jordan, Hunter Cline, Katie Cline, Emma Cline, Madison Cline, Meredith Cline, and Mason Cline and nephews, Terry Bowick and David Bowick and niece, Sandy Quarles. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bobbie Louise Martin Gable, and their infant son, Charles H. Gable, Jr.
Charles had a passion for the simple pleasures of life. He spent countless hours in his vegetable garden and tending to his flowers, and he derived great joy from his woodworking projects. Despite his many responsibilities and commitments, Charles always made time for his family, cherishing every moment spent with his loved ones.
