Benjamin "Ben" Scott passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at the age of 86 at his home in the Iveytown community of Lincoln County, Georgia near where he was born and raised.
Son of the late John Robert and Thelma Ivey Scott, he was born on October 12, 1938. He attended Bethany School until 7th grade and went on to graduate from Lincolnton High School in 1956, Ben went on to honorably serve his country in the United States Air Force for four years. His love for his nation was only matched by his passion for craftsmanship. After his military service, he followed his brother J.R. to Texas where he learned machinist work. When he returned to the Augusta area, he was employed at SRS for a short time before establishing Scott's Machine Shop in 1977 which he operated until his well-deserved retirement in 2000. Ben's work ethic and commitment to quality left a lasting impact on the local industry and those who worked alongside him. Ben's zest for life extended far beyond his professional endeavors. An avid outdoorsman, he relished in the simple pleasures of playing cards, traveling, camping, and fishing, embracing every opportunity to cast a line into the waters that he knew so well. Years ago, he enjoyed his annual elk hunting trip to Colorado. His love for the outdoors was a legacy he enjoyed sharing with friends and family over the years. He was a longtime member of Bethany Methodist Church and always enjoyed cooking for the Methodist Men's Club's meetings. The loss of Ben's first wife, Mary Cook Scott, was a profound sorrow, yet love found a way to heal his heart when he married Dorothy "Dot" Howell Scott. Though Dot recently predeceased him in 2023, their time together was filled with joy and companionship. Ben was also preceded in death by his stepson, Chris Hudler, and his beloved grandson, Austin Goolsby, whose memories remain a source of comfort and pride for the family. Ben is survived by his daughters, Virginia S. "Ginny" Crook and husband Donnie of Marshalville, Teresa S. Steyer and husband Cary of Evans, and Susan Heitmann and husband Chris of Lincolnton; his son, Joseph Floyd Scott and wife Joanne of Martinez; and his daughter-in-law, Carla Hudler of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Stephanie Barr, Kristen Cartledge, Taylor Crook, Brandon Goolsby, Jackson Scott, Gavin Heitmann, and Juliet Scott, as well as his seven great-grandchildren. Ben also leaves behind his special friend, Kathryn Prater "Kay" Robinson, who provided companionship and support.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 2pm at Bethany Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1pm until the hour of the funeral in the church.
Beggs Funeral Home, Lincolnton is honored to serve the family of Mr. Benjamin "Ben" Scott.
