Amos Martin Obituary

Mr. Amos Dudley “Famous Amos” Martin, 82 of Laura Lane, Washington, Ga entered into rest on March 11, 2019 at Doctors Hospital, Augusta.  Mr. Martin, son of the late Amos Augustus and Mary Doris Taylor Martin, grew up in the family oil distribution business and graduated from Washington High School in 1955.  Within the few years that followed, he attended Georgia Military College in Milledgeville and then served as a submariner in the US Navy.  At an early age, he cultivated a love for automobiles that included racing, building cars and whatever it took to make them go faster.  He was an avid hunter out West, loved to go deep sea fishing, and flew any type of airplane every chance he got.

Amos was the owner of Martin Oil Co., Wilkes Gulf Station, and opened Martin Alignment and Brakes in 1986 which he operated until his retirement.  Throughout his lifetime, he had been a member of numerous civic organizations, clubs, and church affiliations including charter member of Little River Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Washington Wilkes Country Club, Jaycees, Rotary Club, Memory Lane Car Club and the First Baptist Church where he served in the Choir and Friendship Sunday School Class. His brother, Bobby Martin, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Rosa Lee Godwin Martin; daughter Libby Walton Foster and husband Jeff of Washington; brother, Jon Martin and wife Merrilee of Atlanta; sister, Mary Bess Goodrick and husband Jeff of Decatur; grandchildren, Clayton Foster, Abby Foster, and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life drop-in reception will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2019 from 2pm until 4pm at First Baptist Church in the fellowship hall of Washington. To commemorate his memory, the Memory Lane Car Club will attend and display their classic cars on the church property.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Carter Samuel Martin Fund and mailed to: Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation; c/o Sara Wagoner, 3395 NE Expressway, Atlanta, Ga 30341, or on-line at:  choa.org, select “Aflac” and “Memorial Gift” for Carter Martin. (This is a Children’s Cancer Foundation and Carter Martin was Amos’ nephew.)
