William Henry Harris Jr., affectionately known as Henry as well as "Brother" by his family, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at his residence in Washington, Georgia. He was born on May 8, 1953, in Washington, where he would spend his life nurturing relationships and creating lasting memories for all those fortunate enough to know him.
Henry was a dedicated retail business owner, passionately involved in several enterprises throughout his career. His contributions to the community were significant, as he approached his work with both care and enthusiasm. Henry was not only known for his business acumen but also for his gentle spirit, likened to that of a farmer tending to his crops, always striving to produce great outcomes that enriched the lives of those around him. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
An accomplished individual, Henry was a proud member of the inaugural graduating class of Wilkes Academy in 1971. He furthered his education by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer University in 1975. His connection to Mercer extended beyond academics, as he became a brother of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. For many years, he served as Chapter Advisor, being a big brother to countless men through his extensive association with the fraternity. His mentoring left an indelible mark on many lives, illustrating the values of brotherhood, forgiveness, and perseverance.
Beyond his professional and academic achievements, Henry was known for his warm and inviting personality. He had a generous spirit, giving of his time, knowledge, and love to those around him. While he could be serious when the moment called for it, he loved to bring laughter and joy, delighting friends and family with stories and jokes, even if they didn’t always land as intended.
Henry’s interests were varied and vibrant. He cherished the beauty of nature, particularly enjoying the growth of his flower beds. A history enthusiast, he held a special fascination for the history of Georgia, Wilkes County, the Civil War Era, and family genealogy. He had a knack for organizing memorable gatherings, whether they were cocktail parties or celebrations surrounding the Kentucky Derby, which he loved.
Henry is survived by his son, Jeremy Melton and wife Cheney; sister, Laurie Jackson and husband, Marshall; nieces, Lee Grenade and Kelley Kichler (and her husband, Jeremy); as well as aunts, Angie B. Strother and Laverne B. Edwards. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Mr. William Henry Harris, Sr. and Mrs. Martha Lee Burdette Harris.
A memorial service to honor Henry's life will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 1p.m. at Washington First Methodist Church, located at 102 West Liberty Street in Washington, Georgia. Following the service, a gathering of family and friends will be held at The Tulip 12 E Robert Toombs Avenue Washington, Georgia to celebrate his remarkable life and the lasting impact he made on those around him. Henry's legacy of kindness and mentorship will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Washington First Methodist Church Choir.
