Walter "Walt" Robert Young

Walter "Walt" Robert Young, 92, Thomson, Georgia, entered into eternal rest on August 5, 2024, at Doctors Hospital, Augusta, Georgia.

Walt was born in Athol, Massachusetts and joined the US Army in 1949. After returning from his tour in Italy in 1963, he met and married his second wife Anita Evans Herndon in 1964. During their married life, they lived in many different locations while he was serving in the Army.  After his retirement from the Army in 1969, they moved to Augusta, then Lincolnton until they settled in Thomson, Georgia in 1991.

Walt and Anita were parishioners of Queen of Angels Catholic Church. They were avid golfers and loved dancing together at their much-loved Belle Meade Country Club, and Walt was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Walt was preceded in death by his "Bride" of 58 years, Anita Young; and his parents, Walter and Maryon Young. He is survived by his daughters, Maria Cook and Sherryl A. Herndon; his grandchildren, Ken Cook, Joey Sarber, Kaitlen Carlson, and Brandon Denton. Together he and Anita were blessed with seven great grandchildren. He was much loved and known as Pawpa to all his family.

His memorial viewing will be at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Thomson, Georgia on Saturday, August 10th beginning at 12:00 noon with a funeral Mass to be held at 1:00 p.m.  He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife on Sunday, August 11th at 4:30 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, in Dexter, Georgia.
