Mrs. Susan Thornton Burgess, 64 of Washington St., Lincolnton entered into rest on Saturday, January 2, 2021

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 3pm at Rehoboth Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 pm on Tuesday until the hour of the funeral in the church.

Mrs. Burgess, daughter of the late Clarke and Mary Callaway Thornton, was born and raised in Wilkes County. She graduated from Wilkes Academy in 1974 and was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church. Since 1995 she has owned and operated The Chicken House Restaurant.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Clarke Thornton.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin T. Burgess; sons which she referred to as "the boys", Jeremy "Bubba" Burgess(Andrea) and, Chris Burgess(Saundi) all of Lincolnton; brother, Terry Thornton of Washington; mother-in-law, Mary Jane Clement, Lincolnton; sister-in-law, Faye Thornton of Washington; aunt, Grace Hunter of Crawfordville; grandchildren, J.M. Burgess, Hannah Strother, Ben Strother, and Caden Shaufelberger; her dogs, Mr B. and Annie.
