Stephen Gibson

Stephen Robert Gibson passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026, in Wilkes County, Georgia, at the age of 70.Stephen was born on June 29, 1956, in Watertown, New York, and his life began in a family that moved often because his father worked for NASA. Those years took him from New York to Ohio, then to Alabama, back to Ohio, and eventually to Georgia, where he built the roots that would shape much of his adult life. Through every move and every new place, Stephen carried with him a steady spirit, a practical nature, and the ability to adapt to whatever life placed before him.He graduated from Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, Georgia, in 1974, and later continued his education at Athens Technical College in Athens, Georgia, where he graduated in 1985. Stephen valued hard work, skill, and doing a job well, and those qualities guided him throughout his career. He spent 35 years as a machinist with Douglas Machines in Athens, Georgia, where he became known for his dependability, his work ethic, and the quiet pride he took in his craft. He retired in 2023 after a lifetime of steady labor and dedication.On June 25, 1982, Stephen married Judy Vandiver, and together they shared a long life built on love, loyalty, and companionship. Their marriage was marked by enduring commitment and the many ordinary, meaningful moments that make a life together so rich. Stephen was a devoted husband and a steady presence to those closest to him. He was also a beloved godfather to Kay Silvey Barnett, whom he cared for deeply and often spoke of with affection as his other daughter.

Stephen was a man who loved his family and extended family, and he treasured the time he spent with them. He was especially close to his brother Mark and to Mark’s children, and those bonds meant a great deal to him throughout his life. Family was central to Stephen’s world, and he showed his love in practical ways, through his presence, his help, and his willingness to be there when needed. He was the kind of man who stepped in quietly, offered support without fanfare, and made life easier for those around him.He was known for his sarcasm and quick wit, qualities that often brought a smile to those who knew him best. Though he was not especially social, he was deeply content in the company of the people he trusted and loved. He preferred the peace of home and the comfort of familiar surroundings, and he especially enjoyed being outdoors when he was able.

Stephen also had a lifelong love of NASCAR, classic cars, and guns, and he enjoyed talking about these interests with the people who shared them. He and his son-in-law especially enjoyed comparing firearms and discussing the ones they hoped to own someday. He also found satisfaction in helping others, and he and Judy supported a number of charities over the years, reflecting their generous hearts and concern for the well-being of others.Stephen Robert Gibson will be remembered as a hardworking man, a loving husband, a devoted family member, and a friend to many. He lived his life with honesty, humor, and quiet strength, and he left behind memories that will be cherished by all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed, but the love he gave, the example he set, and the many lives he touched will remain a lasting part of his legacy.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Vandiver Gibson; daughter, Sara Gibson Heard and husband Damion Lamont Heard, Sr.; grandchildren, Ivana Lois Heard and Damion Lamont Heard, Jr. nicknamed LB “Little Boy” by Stephen when LB was little; brothers Mark Gibson and Andy Gibson. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Nancy Gibson and brother, Peter “Pete” Gibson.
