Roger L. Reid Retired U.S. Army Thomson, GA. - Mr. Roger Luther Reid, age 89 entered into rest Sunday, January 8, 2012 at the Georgia War Veteran's Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Jeanett Phillips Reid and the late Inez Lemke Reid. Roger Reid was born and raised in Lincoln County, Georgia and was the son of the late Luther F. Reed and the late Ruby Kirk Reed. In 1940, Mr. Reid enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served 46 months in World War II, 34th Infantry, 24th Division; 14 months in Korea, 31st Infantry, 7th Division; Vietnam for a year in an Advisory Capacity; and a Pearl Harbor Survivor. After 22 years of service, he retired as First Sgt. E8. While serving, Mr. Reid was honored with many awards and decorations. His awards included the Combat Infantry Badge with 2nd award, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal with 4 loops, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Pearl Harbor Survivor Medal, Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with 4 Battle Stars with Arrow, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars, Philippine Defense Ribbon, Korean Service Medal, Korean 50 Year Medal of Appreciation, US Presidential Unit Citation (for Combat on Corregidor), Philippine Presidential Unit (Island Combat) Korean Presidential Unit Citation (Deadly Combat Action) Vietnam Service Medal. After retiring from the Army, Mr. Reid was employed with Wilson Ford, Huber Wood, J.M. Huber, Harrison Farms and Reed Dairy. Mr. Reid was a member and served in many organizations, the A.J. Miller Masonic Lodge #204 in Thomson, Harlem Lodge #276, Scottish Rite Bodies in Augusta, Alee Shriners in Savannah, Augusta Shrine Club, Thomson Shrine Club, VFW Post 7778 in Thomson, National Rifle Association and Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Mr. Reid was a member of First Baptist Church and the Men's Bible Class in Thomson. Mr. Reid is survived by his daughter, Terry Bryan and friend, John Hryc; granddaughters, LeAnn Perdue Rozzell, Lori Beth Reid and great granddaughter, Melody Brooke Rozzell; daughter in law, Kathie Reid; brother, Thomas Olin Reed and sister, Doris Reed Holloway. He was preceded in death by his son, Conny Mack Reid; granddaughter, Melody Perdue and great grandson, Will Hawkins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Leonard Dupree and Rev. David Walker officiating. Pallbearers will be: Neal Reed, Donald Reed, Hawes Reed, Thomas Reed, Jimmy Crawley and Steve Perdue. Honorary Pallbearers will be Masons, members of the Thomson Shrine Club and members of the Men's Bible Class. Interment will follow in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors and Masonic Rites. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m., Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the funeral home.
