Roberta Roper
Thomson – Roberta Roper, resident of Thomson since 2002, died Monday the 20
th
of April. She passed peacefully and with dignity in her home with family members at her side.
Born on November 6, 1942 in Washington, GA, Jane Roberta Johnson Roper was the second of four children born to Robert Willie Johnson and Jane Septima Fluker Johnson. A graduate of O'Keefe High School in Atlanta, Roberta earned her degree in nursing from Georgia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and her BS in Social Sciences from Tift College. It was during her time at Georgia Baptist that she met John Warren Roper, and the two were married on July 2

, 1966 at Northwest Baptist Church in Atlanta. John was ordained into the ministry that same year, and Roberta took on her role of minister's wife with exceeding grace and sincerity.
A lifetime caregiver, educator, Roberta worked tirelessly in various institutions in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia as a nurse, administrator, and teacher. She worked for several hospitals and home health services in Savannah, GA, before becoming an Allied Health Instructor for LPN and CNA students at Savannah Technical College. After the death of her husband in 1997, Roberta moved to Thomson where she continued to work as Assistant Director of Nursing for Augusta Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Augusta, GA, and in 2005 made full circle by working in Washington, GA as RN supervisor at Wilkes Healthcare Nursing Center until 2006 when she was forced to retire from any full-time position due to illness.
A true Southerner, "Bertie" loved animals – especially horses and her beloved dogs – gardening, good food, good music, good sermons, and, above all else, her family. She is preceded in death by her sister, Margaret, and is survived by her brother, Robert; sister, Ann; brothers-in-law Milow and Gary, sons, Nathaniel and Christopher; daughters-in-law, Amanda and Heather; nephews, James and Robert; and her beloved grandchildren, John and Henry.
The funeral is to be held at First Baptist Church in Thomson, Thursday, April 23
rd
at 2:00 p.m. There will be a visitation to precede the service at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
Interment will follow in the Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made in her memory to First Baptist Church or Pine Grove Baptist Church in Thomson, GA or to the American Cancer Society.
