Robert J Putney, 88, passed away on February 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 6th, 1934 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Jessie and Gertrude Putney. He was the oldest of 5 siblings and has one surviving sister, Mary Jo Putney, in Washington state.
Robert, Bob, was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He married his wife, Barbara, on January 17, 1976 -- they spent 47 wonderful years together. He is survived by his children: Karen Lawson, Kimberly Lewis, Ken & Lisa Simmons, and Kristina Putney Curtin. He was a proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren (one of which is expected any moment now) and his beloved dog, Maggie May.
To say Bob was an active man is an understatement. Throughout his life he was known for his natural athleticism, and his ability to pick up just about any sport or game easily. Over the years he played baseball, football, tennis, volleyball, bowling, swimming, and so many others. He coached football at various schools in the 60's, played for the Army as well as a short stint with the San Francisco 49ers before a sports injury changed his trajectory. But his true passion was golf. An avid and talented golfer, he was fortunate to have played some of the most beautiful and treasured courses in the world. He both played & placed in multiple course tournaments both Pro and Pro/Am over the years.
He graduated from The University of Richmond in 1961, is a proud Army veteran, and had a successful professional career. He worked for Schwinn Bicycle Company for 25 years before he moved on to his dream job with Aldila Golf in 1989. In both industries he was respected and appreciated for his contributions.
Bob was a truly happy man, he had a blessed and interesting life full of joy. (And had the stories to prove it!) He'll be remembered for so many things by so many, but never without a smile on his face. He had an unwavering devotion to his family and deeply loved his wife, Barbara. He will be missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, February 25th, at Lutheran Church by the Lake in McCormick, SC.
