Richard "Rick" Murphy
Thomson, GA- Mr. Richard Curtis "Rick" Murphy, 69, of Stagecoach Rd. entered into rest July 15, 2016 after a 16 month courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Murphy grew up in Augusta, Georgia and was the son of late Nesbit C. Murphy and the late Ruth Murphy. He was a 1965 graduate of Butler High School, attended Augusta College, Brenau College and was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College. Mr. Murphy lived in Thomson for many years and was very active in the community as a former Rotarian, former Chairman of the Thomson Recreation Department and youth baseball coach. He was an avid golfer and a member of Belle Meade Country Club. Mr. Murphy was also a member of Thomson First United Methodist Church. He was affectionately known as "Potsie" by his grandchildren that brought so much joy to him. Mr. Murphy served in the Army Reserves and the Georgia National Guard 878 th Engineer Combat Battalion and retired as Major. During his 25 years of service as a decorated veteran, Major Murphy served in special missions in Panama, Egypt, Jordan and Oman.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Mencken Murphy; son, Carter Murphy (Mindy); daughter, Lori Murphy Ducey (Adam); grandchildren, Anna Wells, Jack, Charlie, Carson, Andie and Oliver; brothers, Jerry Murphy, Mike Murphy (Dale); sister, Martha M. Beckum (Larry); mother in law, Louise Wells Mencken; sister in law and brother in law, Carol and Tommy Dudley; nieces and nephews and Belle Meade Country Club golfing buddies.
A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock a.m., Monday, July 18 th at Thomson First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Barnes officiating. There will be a private interment at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
