Born in Petersburg, Virginia on September 13, 1944, Richard's early years were spent in Dekalb County, where his leadership and athletic prowess shone brightly as the quarterback captain of the John B. Gordon High School football team. His remarkable performance on the field earned him the honor of Most Valuable Player in 1963, the year of his graduation. After high school, Richard's passion for learning and serving others led him to Toccoa Falls College, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Theology. His quest for knowledge continued at the Candler School of Theology at Emory, culminating in a Master's Degree. With his education as a solid foundation, Richard dedicated himself to the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church. From 1981 until 2000, he served with unwavering commitment, beginning his ministry in Franklin County at Prospect United Methodist and eventually retiring for the first time while serving Austell First United Methodist. When he was younger, Richard also pursued a career in the printing industry. He owned and operated Broom's Bindery in Atlanta, where he was recognized as a Master Book Binder, a title that reflected his expertise in hand-binding old books when required. His extensive knowledge made him a valuable consultant in the printing industry, where he taught troubleshooting techniques to enhance the productivity of printing plants. Richard's interests and talents extended well beyond the pulpit and his professional life. In his younger days, he coached football for the Dekalb County Recreation Department and later brought his leadership skills to soccer in the Lincoln County Recreation Program. A man of many talents, he was also a very good musician, delighting in playing guitar and singing. His love for animals was evident in his special bond with his horse, Fancy Dancer. Additionally, Richard was an avid golfer and an enthusiastic fisherman, pursuits that reflected his appreciation for the great outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. Those who knew Richard admired his faith-filled and passionate approach to every aspect of his life. His wife fondly referred to him as "Mr. Everything," a testament to his multifaceted abilities and his unwavering dedication to his family, his work, and his community.
