Paulette Long George passed away on Saturday morning, September 10, 2022 at Tignall House at the age of 76.
Born August 18, 1946 to Raleigh Meldrum Long and Irene Bohler Long. She grew up on the farm in Lincolnton and graduated from Lincolnton High School in 1964. She learned at a very young age to play the piano which she continued throughout her life. She received her Associates Degree in Business at the Women's College of Georgia and would return later in life to the same school which is now Georgia College and graduate in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Music.
Paulette's incredible gift of playing the piano led her to playing for the First Presbyterian Church of Union Point where she regularly attended service. Her musical experiences provided many opportunities for fulfillment through the years and range from accompanying the church choir to playing with her family's string band. She studied with several accomplished instructors, including Troupe Harris, Jr. of Washington, Ga.
She was a long-time resident of Greene County having lived in Union Point and taught English at Greene County High School. Later, she moved back into the family homeplace and taught English at Thomson High School. She enjoyed spending her time with her high school sweetheart Ben "Dickie" Garrard attending car shows, bookstores, art exhibits, and regular Kiwanis Club meetings where they were both members.
Paulette is survived by her three children, Robert Chadwick George, Marian Elizabeth van den Berg George (husband Charl van den Berg), and Franklin Meldrum "Mel" George (wife Carrie George); brothers, Raleigh Meldrum Long, Jr. and Charles Michael Long. She was known as "GoGo" to her six grandchildren: Will and Ben George (Rob), Jenna and Chae van den Berg (Mary Beth), and Wyatt and Raleigh Kate George (Mel).
A visitation will be held at Beggs Funeral Home, Lincolnton from 6 PM - 8 PM on Thursday, September 15, 2022 and a memorial service will be on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 11 AM at St. Paul Church with the interment following in the church cemetery.
