Norman Haynes

Mr. Norman Neal Haynes, 81, devoted husband and father, entered into the eternal presence of the Lord on Friday, December 7, 2007, at the Hospice House in Greenwood. A celebration of Norman's life will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, December 10, 2007, at Lutheran Church By The Lake, 100 Twelve Oaks Drive & Highway 378, McCormick, SC 29835. Pastor Dick Albert will lead the service. Born May 17, 1926, to Joe and Esther Haynes in Easton, Missouri, Norman grew up in St. Joseph, Missouri. After graduating from Benton High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as an infantryman in the South Pacific. During the occupation of Japan, Norman was stationed in Hiroshima. Honorably discharged in 1946, he held the rank of sergeant. He went on to further his education at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where he earned B.A. and LLB degrees, passing the Missouri bar exam in June of 1951. That July, he was appointed Special Agent in the F.B.I., and on November 9 of the same year, he married Katherine "Peggy" McConnell, with whom he shared his life for fifty-six years. Norman joined Avon Products in May of '54, and served in various capacities, ultimately attaining the level of Group Vice-President. Upon retirement, avid golfers Norman and Peggy headed for the sunny South and the green golf courses in Roswell, Georgia. In January 1997, Norman and Peggy made their way to Savannah Lakes, where they built their dream home and where they also found a home of faith in their membership in the Lutheran Church By The Lake. There, Norman was an active fundraiser and he found great joy in being a member of the choir. Norman was preceded in death by his parents and by his siblings, Virginia, Joseph, and Dewey. His beloved and loving wife, Peggy, their two sons, Kevin and Jeffrey, and Jeffrey's wife, Linda, survive him. He also leaves behind dear friends, many of whom reside in the Savannah Lakes community. If so desired, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any of the following: Lutheran Church By The Lake (address above), Hospice House, 408 West Alexander Avenue, Greenwood, SC 29646 Savannah Heights Living Center, 204 Holiday Road, McCormick, SC 29835 American Cancer Society
