Mrs. Mildred Cliatt "Mickey" Norman, 91 of Augusta Hwy., Lincolnton went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at AdventHealth in Apopka, Florida.
Mrs. Norman, daughter of the late Am Hogan and Vinnie Vickery Cliatt was born on July 6, 1931 in Lincoln County, graduated from Lincolnton High School in 1948 and married Murray Toombs Norman on June 16, 1950. She attended Georgia Southern and later graduated from the University of Georgia where she earned both Masters and Specialist degrees. Her teaching career began in Columbia County and shortly thereafter, she was employed by Lincoln County where she taught mathematics for 33 years. After retirement, Mickey and her husband Murray served as Baptist Mission Volunteers in Jos, Nigeria where she taught at Hillcrest (Mission) School and they hosted at Baptist Centre, a mission guest house, where their grandchildren Sara Beth, Amy, and Catherine lived with them while attending boarding school.
Her journey of serving Jesus Christ, her family and community began at an early age when she joined New Hope Baptist Church where she served faithfully in many capacities until transferring her membership to Goshen Baptist Church in 2005. As recent as a few days before her death, she was still attending all services that were held weekly.
If gold medals or trophies were given for grandparents, she and Murray would have held the title of "World's Greatest Grandparents" for decades year after year. Hundreds of miles never stopped them from attending the many sporting and academic events of their grandchildren when they were young and all special occasions into their adulthood. Even as their ages became closer to 90, they continued to travel to Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee and Northwest Georgia in support of any activities they were involved in.
In addition to church and family, she was active with the Lincoln County Historical Society where she served as secretary for many years, the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Association and was an avid supporter of the Lincoln County Red Devils and Georgia Bulldogs.
She is survived by her four children, Dr. Andy M. Norman of Manchester, TN, Dan C. Norman of Blowing Rock, NC, Vinnie V. "VeVe" Thompson of Apopka, FL, and Dr. John T. Norman of Dalton, GA.; daughters-in-law, Judy T. Norman, Teresa G. Norman, and Angie D. Norman; son-in-law, Ray Thompson; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and sister-in-law, Ellie N. Beggs. In addition to her husband of 70 years, Murray Toombs Norman, she was preceded in death by her siblings John Vickery Cliatt and Carol Jane Paradise.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11 am at New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie Walton, Dr. Benny Pate and Michael Catlett officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great- grandsons, Jim Bob Norman, Ben Norman, Toombs Norman, Harrison Norman, Matt Thompson, Jacob Smith, Daniel Smith and Isaac Glorioso. Nephews, Fred Paradise, Jack Paradise, Gary Ward, Ernie Guthrie, Ronnie Myers, Brian Beggs, Keith Beggs, and Kevin Beggs will serve as honorary pallbearers.
