Obituary for Michael A. Benson  1962-2022

Beloved husband and father, Michael Anthony Benson (Mike) entered into God's Kingdom on March 2, 2022 after a long battle with cancer at the young age of 59.  Mike was surrounded by many loving family members and friends when he passed.

Mike was born to Dorothy and William Benson on September 1, 1962 in St. Louis, Missouri.  A proud Veteran, he served in the U.S. Army between 1982-1987.  Mike later continued his service with the armed forces for most of his career in the defense IT and communications sector, first as a DOD civilian and later as a successful business owner in Augusta, GA.

In 1992, Mike met Barbara while working together at Ft. Riley, Kansas; it was a match truly made in Heaven.  Mike and Barbara together raised six children; Stacey, Sabrina, Carmen, Ashley, Terry and Taylor.  Mike loved traveling, golfing, boating, and entertaining family and friends.  He was often the life of the party and never met a stranger.  Most importantly, Mike reconnected with his Catholic faith and was passionate about his love for God.  The pro-life message was remarkably important to him.  With Mike's passing, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of his physical life on Earth, it's the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey.

Mike joins his mother, Dorothy Benson; his father, William J. Benson (Bill); and sister, Kathleen Benson, in Heaven.  He is survived by many loving family members, including his wife of 28 years, Barbara Benson and children:  Stacey McGinley (Edward), Sabrina Benson, Carmen Benson, Ashley Benson (Matt), Terrance Jackson (Lalita), and Taylor Benson.  He has four grandchildren:  Avah McGinley, Destinee Curry, Sophia-Grace Benson, and Athena Jackson and is survived by siblings: Bill Benson, Peggy Zimmerman, Michele Becker, and Joe Benson; and Godchildren, Elise and Gavin Resto.

One of Mike's favorite songs was "I Lived" by OneRepublic.  It reminds us to live life to the

fullest, always love, and to celebrate every moment, so that at the end of your journey here on Earth you can say: "I did it all.  I owned every second that this world could give.  I saw so many places, the things that I did.  With every broken bone, I swear I lived."  Mike truly lived and he will continue to live for eternity with our Heavenly Father.

Visitation will be held at Beggs Funeral Home in Thomson, Georgia from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 pm on March 4, 2022.  His funeral mass will be held at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Thomson, GA at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 5, 2022, followed by a private, graveside service for immediate family at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.  Pallbearers for the service are Kenneth Thompson, Lyn (Bubba) Heath, Evin Resto, Javin Asuncion, Kenny Murray and Pete Moody.  His many friends and family members are invited to join his family for a celebration of life at Pizza Central in Evans, GA; drop in between 2:00 and 4:00 pm on Saturday.

Mike had the most remarkable gift of making children smile.  They were always drawn to him and brought him so much joy.  In honor of this, Mike's family request donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in lieu of flowers.  Memorials in his name may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital on-line, by phone or mail at:
