Merrill Webster Callaway, Sr.
Warrenton, GA- Mr. Merrill Webster Callaway, Sr., 92, entered into rest December 2, 2013. He was the beloved husband of the late Louise Brown Callaway.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Warrenton with Rev. Mike Dann and Rev. J. B. Redd officiating. Interment will follow in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of First Baptist Church.
Mr. Callaway was a native of Wilkes County, Georgia and was the son of the late Seaborn Callaway and the late Gertrude Sherrer Callaway. He joined Sardis Baptist Church in Rayle, Georgia at age 10. After finishing high school, he went to work in Charleston, South Carolina during World War II working in the shipyards. Following the war, he returned to Wilkes County and worked with the Coca Cola Bottling Plant, Shine Laundry and Dry Cleaners, and later became a licensed funeral director. He opened M. W. Callaway & Sons Funeral Home in Washington and in 1964, he moved his business to Warrenton and later locations in Wrens, Thomson and Crawfordville. Mr. Callaway currently held an active Georgia Funeral Director's license. He served on the Warrenton City Council and served as Mayor of Warrenton for many years. Mr. Callaway was a member of First Baptist Church, Warrenton, the Senior Men's Sunday School Class, Franklin Masonic Lodge #11 in Warrenton, Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta and a former member of the Warrenton Kiwanis Club. Mr. Callaway was also preceded in death by his brother, S. T. Callaway.
Survivors include his sons, Merrill Webster Callaway, Jr., Douglas Callaway and wife, Gayle all of Warrenton; grandchildren, Michael Callaway and wife, Melissa, Christy C. Hinton and husband, Jay, Mark Callaway and wife, Michelle, Chris Callaway and Ashli Callaway; and six great grandchildren, Jacey Hinton, Brooke Hinton, Anna Hinton, Chanler Callaway, Wyatt Callaway and Eden Callaway.
Friends may call at the residence of Doug and Gayle Callaway, 167 Crestview Drive, Warrenton, GA or the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the funeral home.
