Mary Neil Dill

Mary Neil Thompson Dill, known affectionately as "Ma", left this world on January 16, 2024, at the age of 93, surrounded by the love of her family in Augusta, Ga.

Born along with a twin sister, Monteal on July 29, 1930, in Loganville, Ga, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Trummie Still Thompson.

In 1947, Mary's life took a beautiful turn when she married Charles "Monkey" Dill on July 23. Their love story began with a unique twist, as Monkey chose Mary, the one with the looks, to be his wife an encounter involving a fallen tree and her mother's playful proposition. Together, they built a life in Lincolnton, filled with warmth and joy, until his passing.

Mary's devotion to her family was the cornerstone of her existence, as she never sought work outside the home, focusing instead on nurturing her loved ones. Her legacy is carried on by her sons, Charles "Danny" Dill, Jr., George Dill and his wife Angela; daughters, Mary Danner, Peggy Higgins and her husband Floyd, Debbie Sherman; daughter-in-law, Susan "Susie" Dill; and a grandson she raised in her home, Marcus Sherman. Her joy was multiplied by her grandchildren, Marsha Willis and her husband Kevin, Dan Dill and his fiancée Delaney, Marcus Sherman and his wife Princess, Jamey Danner, Amanda Brassell and her husband Sam, Lauren Dill, and Marlin Sherman. Her brother, Billy Thompson of Loganville, also survives her. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles "Monkey" Dill, and sons, Thomas Hoyt Dill and Dan Truitt Dill. Mary's life was a testament to her faith. A lifelong member of Jones Chapel, she was the congregation's oldest member and held a special place within its walls, with a pew designated just for her. Her card ministry was one of her many acts of service, as she diligently sent cards for all occasions to church members, brightening the days of many with her thoughtful words. Her interests were varied and full of life. Mary loved attending auctions, searching for treasures and keepsakes. A simple Hardee's hamburger and a cold Pepsi Cola brought her great pleasure, as did gardening, working in the yard, and contributing to her church's sign with the phrase of the week. Mary's love for travel and conversations with friends on the telephone were sources of great joy, although in later years, her ability to engage in these pastimes was limited by her hearing.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 2 pm at Jones Chapel. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  In honor of Mrs. Dill's love for her church, the family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6pm until 9pm at Jones Chapel.
