Lula M. Johnston Thomson, GA-Mrs. Lula M. Johnston, 106, went home to be with her loving Father on February 1, 2015. She was an angel among us and to know her was to love her. She retired from Fort Gordon Civil Service in 1969 where she served as Registered Medical Secretary and supervisor of clerk stenographers, as well as secretary to several chiefs of professional services in the United States Army Hospital at Fort Gordon. She received several suggestion award certificates, original creator of the cancer files at Fort Gordon, and honorary life member of retired federal employees. Upon retirement, she became a Red Cross volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Augusta. Preceded in death by her parents, Lula and John Peter McKellar, her husband LeeRoy Miller Johnston, her son, LeeRoy Fredrick Johnston, brother, William P. McKellar, sister, Lucille McClaine, grandson, Brian Allen Willis, and granddaughter, Trina Herrin. She is survived by her daughter, Lou Ellen Johnston Willis of Thomson and Mildred Johnston Newman of Augusta, 12 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. She was an avid reader, a member of the Augusta Rose Society and won several awards for her roses. Mrs. Johnson was born in El Paso, TX in 1908 and graduated from Tubman High School in Augusta, GA. She attended Business College in Augusta and went to work for Civil Service at the Oliver General Hospital, Veterans Hospital and Army Hospital at Fort Gordon. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Thomson, a former member of Southside Baptist Church in Augusta, where she served as president of W.M.U. and taught children's church training for several years. She received the Faithful Service Award in 1996. The membership of Southside Baptist Church dedicated the church library to Mrs. Johnston due to her faithful devotion, generous contributions and love for the written word. Her love for children and their spiritual development has led to many children learning the gospel story and how they can have eternal life. Her dedication and Christ-like lifestyle radiated inspiration and motivated everyone she was in contact with to live a more Christian life. She will be sadly missed by her family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at Second Baptist Church, Thomson with Rev. Greg Glover, Rev. Lester Jenkins and Rev. Greg Bentley officiating. Interment will follow in the Walker Cemetery, Augusta. Pallbearers will be: Roy Johnston, Phillip Johnston, Dennis Johnston, Bobby Willis, Chuck Willis, Lawrence Willis, Gary Callaway and Phil Glover. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Beggs Funeral Home 799 Cobbham Rd., Thomson, GA is in charge.
