Joseph Leonard Mimms, 87, of Bradley, South Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on December 29, 2015 at home. A native of Lumber City, Georgia, he was the son of the late Joseph Leonard Mimms and Magree Bryson Mimms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mantha (Mickey) Mimms), and sisters Lois Mimms Wooten, Mary Sallie Mimms and Hilda Mimms. He is survived by his wife, Jewell Mimms, his son, Carl Mimms of Waynesville, NC, and grandchildren Shannon Horton and husband Andrew, Nathan Mimms and Kelly Mimms; daughter Susan Myers of Charlotte; stepdaughters Marian O'Neil and husband Steve, and Hollis Messer and husband Max and their sons, Wyatt and Colton; aunt Edna Bryson of Brevard, NC, and nephew Johnny Burkett of Lumber City, GA.
He was a man of many interests and accomplishments: He received his Amateur Radio license, K4GBH, in 1957 and went on to receive his Extra Class License. He retired after 22-1/2 years in the Air Force, having served in 3 wars: WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War. He worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, N ASa , and was also an aircraft pilot. After retiring he worked for several companies as a Computer Engineer and owned his own business for many years.
Joe was a member of Stonewall Lodge No. 124 in Troy, SC, and also a member of Red Fez Shrine Club in McCormick, SC. He was a member of Troy Baptist Church where he served as a deacon since 2009.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, or Shriners Hospitals for Children, of Greenville, SC.
