John Ludwig, Sr.

John Gilbert Ludwig, Sr., known as "Big John," to family and friends alike, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025 in the same house in Lincolnton, Georgia, where he first entered the world on February 16, 1942, the beloved son of the late John and Lydia Gassaway Simmons. It was here, amidst the familiar surroundings of his birthplace, that he concluded a life marked by unwavering dedication to family, community, and service. Big John's childhood years were as adventurous as they were virtuous. His father's military service took the family to Japan, where John spent his 8th and 9th-grade years and while there, he climbed the majestic slopes of Mt. Fuji. Nevertheless, his heart remained connected to the red clay of Lincoln County, and he soon returned to assist with his grandmother's care. There, he shined as a multi-talented young man, excelling in football, baseball, and track, and proudly graduating from Lincolnton High School in 1960. His commitment to education and community was unwavering. While serving in the US Army Reserves, John also pursued higher education at the University of Georgia, attaining a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. His determination was such that even an offer to join the Georgia Bulldogs football team could not deter him from his responsibilities to his grandmother and the jobs that financed his studies. After a brief period working for Talmadge Reed, a local businessman and influential figure in his life, Big John ventured into agriculture, owning a chicken farm raising broilers. However, his true calling was in public service. He dedicated 30 years to the Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) in Lincoln County, quickly rising to become the director. His impeccable work ethic was legendary; seldom did he take a sick day or vacation, accruing 34 years of service credit. His tenure was distinguished by commendations for efficiency and exemplary bookkeeping by the state auditors time after time. John's selflessness extended beyond his professional life. He diligently managed the bookkeeping for Wee Wisdom, a daycare that his wife operated for 22 years, and was a cherished presence among the children, especially during his daily lunchtime visits. His faith was a cornerstone of his existence; he was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church for 44 years, contributing as a Youth Boy's Sunday School teacher and Deacon, and later joined the First Assembly of God. Big John's love for sports and youth development was evident in his commitment to coaching Midget Mite Football and Little League Baseball for almost a decade. A staunch supporter of local athletics, he was also the voice of the Lincoln County Red Devils for 18 years, a testament to his passion and community spirit. Additionally, he served as a member of Lincolnton F&AM #354. In retirement, John's industrious nature didn't wane. He briefly drove a dump truck, a school bus, and even served as a Magistrate judge. When leisure permitted, he indulged in rounds of golf at Rocky Branch Golf Club. Above all, Big John's legacy is one of intelligence and selflessness. His love and devotion to his wife and family were unparalleled, and his impact on the community of Lincolnton is immeasurable. John Gilbert Ludwig, Sr. lived a life that was as rich and nurturing as the soil of his beloved Georgia. His memory will be cherished and his contributions to the lives he touched will continue to resonate for generations to come.

He is survived by his wife Reesie Wright Ludwig; daughters, Teresa Wengrow and husband Andy and Angela Ludwig all of  Lincolnton; son, John G Ludwig, Jr. and wife Shannon of Greenville, SC; sisters, Jane Levergood of Atlanta and Beth Buncher of Charleston; grandchildren, Ryan Wengrow, Nicole Melvin, Andy Ray Wengrow, McLain Ludwig, Lawson Ludwig, Emerson Ludwig and great- grandchildren, Sophie Wengrow and Ethan Wengrow; lifetime friend, Joe Racy Wells.
