JOHN T. HAMMOND
John T. Hammond, 74, entered into rest peacefully at home on May 28, 2014. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Westview Cemetery, Thomson. John was the son of Elizabeth Graves Hammond and Earnest Hammond. He is survived by Gayle Cox Hammond, his wife of forty-nine years; their sons, John Chadwick Hammond and Thomas Brittan Hammond (Tamara); grandchildren Sarah Gayle Hammond, Carolyn Elizabeth Hammond, and John Thomas Hammond.
John was a graduate of Edgefield High School and Georgia Southern College, where he earned three degrees in education and counseling. He was an educator for fifty-three years, serving as teacher, guidance counselor, and principal in the public schools of McDuffie County, and as Headmaster of Briarwood Academy. An advocate of educational travel, he led hundreds of students on trips throughout the state of Georgia, to Washington, D.C., through the American West and to Europe. He was honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution as the Outstanding Teacher of American History in Georgia in 2005.
John was a member for more than fifty years of the First Baptist Church of Thomson where he served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Royal Ambassador Director and Sunday School teacher.
If desired, in lieu of food or flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Post Office Box 1205, Thomson, Georgia 30824, or the Briarwood Academy Foundation, Inc., 4859 Thomson Highway, Warrenton, Georgia 30828.
