John J. Azevedo

Mr. John J. Azevedo, Jr. 84 entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 8 ^th at Petra Health and Rehab of McCormick.

Born in Central Falls, RI, he was the son of the late John J. Azevedo, Sr. and Alice Ribeiro Azevedo. He graduated from Central Falls High School in 1947. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served our country overseas in the Korean Conflict.  In November 1952, he married Mary J. Perry of South Dennis, Massachusetts, they were married for 42 years and Mary predeceased John in December of 1994.

John was a very well respected educator and mentor in his home state of Rhode Island. He started his professional career as the Men's and Boy's Program Director of the Pawtucket YMCA, a postion that he held over fifteen years. Later, Mr. Azevedo took over the music program at Lincoln High School, Lincoln, RI and led both its band and chorus for over twenty years. He also co-founded the Cumberland- Lincoln Community Chorus which performed throughout New England for many years. John enjoyed all sports , both as a fan and a participant. Upon retirement, golf became his passion, leading to relocation to Savannah Lakes in McCormick, SC in 1993.

John is survived by his wife of seven years, Miriam Patterson Azevedo of McCormick.

Son, Dennis A. Azevedo, and wife, Diane of Kingston, MA.

Grandsons, Mark J. Azevedo, and wife, Meghan of Owings Mills, MD. and Jason P. Azevedo, and wife, Gesine of Washington, D.C.

His brothers, David R. Azevedo of Lutz, Florida and Leonard P. Azevedo of Fountain Hills, AZ.

Grand-daughter, Sarah E. Walker

John was predeceased by his sister, Lillian Azevedo Culpepper in 1980 and  daughter, Debra J. Walker in 1991.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 10 ^th at 3 o'clock p.m. at the McCormick First Baptist Church with Rev. Gary DeBerry officiating.

The family will receive friends in the chapel at McCormick First Baptist Church beginning at 2 p.m. until the hour of the service on Sunday.

Interment is planned for Saturday, November 16 ^th at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, RI.
