Joanne "JoJo" Penick Hannes, a vibrant soul known for her bold personality and infectious laughter, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025, at The Claiborne at West Lake her home in Martinez, Georgia. Born on September 26, 1943, in Houston, Texas, to the late Kirby Thomas and Marjorie Cathcart Penick, JoJo's life was marked by her love for people, a trait that drew others to her and made her presence a source of joy and comfort. Her laughter was a beacon of happiness that resonated with everyone she met, leaving a lasting impression that will be cherished by all who knew her. She spent the majority of her life in Texas, where her spirit and determination led her to a successful career with AT&T, retiring as a respected manager. Her professional achievements were a testament to her work ethic and leadership skills. Following retirement, JoJo channeled her passion for beauty and style into a second career at a boutique salon, where she continued to brighten the days of those around her. She was also an avid gardener, her green thumb bringing life to an array of plants that thrived under her care. A woman of diverse interests, JoJo loved shopping, whether it was browsing local stores or the thrill of finding treasures online. Her collection of ceramic roosters and rabbits brought her immense joy, each piece a story and a memory. Travel was another of her joys, exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. Back at home, she relished in the camaraderie and challenge of hand and foot canasta, a game that allowed her to connect with friends and family over shared laughs and friendly competition. She was a member of The Church of Christ. She is survived by her brothers, K.T. "Rhea" Penick, Jr. and Buddy Penick, and sister-in-law, Dorothy Ray, along with a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-niece who will miss her deeply. Her life story is also marked by the absence of her beloved husband, Frank Edward "Bill" Hannes, and her brother, William Thomas "Tommy" Penick, who preceded her in death. Spirited is the word that encapsulates JoJo's essence. Her spirit was a flame that danced through life, igniting laughter, love, and memories that will continue to burn brightly in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have been touched by her life. Joanne "JoJo" Penick Hannes will be remembered not just for the life she lived, but for the lives she touched, the happiness she spread, and the love she gave so freely. Her departure leaves us with a void, but also with a treasure trove of moments that will forever be a part of her enduring legacy. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to Hospice Services of Georgia for their end of life care.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 6:30 pm at The Claiborne at West Lake, 557 Furys Ferry Rd., Martinez, GA 30907.
