Thomson, GA – Chief Jerry Lee Stanphill, Sr., 51, entered into rest September 25, 2016 at Piedmont Hospital, Atlanta.
Born January 13, 1965 to J. L. Stanphill and Lucile Dunn Stanphill in Red Bay, Alabama, Jerry moved to Thomson in 1979. After graduating from Thomson High School in 1984, Jerry worked as a firefighter with the Richmond County Fire Department. He graduated from the Augusta Regional Police Academy in 1989 and joined the City of Thomson Fire Department as an Arson Investigator. Jerry worked in the patrol division as a patrol officer and investigator until his appointment as Assistant Chief of Police with the City of Thomson Police Department. During Jerry's tenure in the Police Department, he was named Police Officer of the Year in 1993, 1996, and 1997 by the Thomson Lions Club. In 2008, Jerry was hired as the Chief of Public Safety for the McDuffie County Board of Education. Because of Jerry's experience in law enforcement, he continued to serve our community and was compassionate about working with children, not only as a mentor in the schools, but also as a football coach. He loved his family and working with students every day. Jerry was a christian and Baptist by faith.
In addition to his parents, Jerry is survived by his beloved wife, Amy O. Stanphill; sons, Jerry Lee Stanphill, Jr., and Jaxon Stanphill; and sister, Melissa S. Osborne, all of Thomson.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 9 p.m., Wednesday, September 28 th at the Thomson Middle School Gymnasium. Funeral services will be held at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, September 29 th at the Thomson Middle School Gymnasium. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomson –McDuffie Law Enforcement and Thomson Fire Department.
