Mrs. Jean Hannah Stokes, a beacon of gentle strength and unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2024, in Due West, SC. Born on October 3, 1933, in Charleston, SC, Jean led a life marked by compassion, service, and the warmth of her kitchen. At the age of 90, she left this world as she had lived in it: surrounded by the love of her family, the respect of her colleagues, and the countless memories she created with her friends. Jean's early years in Charleston laid the foundation for a life of caring for others. As the youngest of ten children to Myrtle Berryhill and George Cullen Hannah, she learned the value of family and community early on. Though she was predeceased by her parents, her husband, John Russell Stokes, Sr., her grandson Kevin Sikes, and all her nine siblings, Jean's legacy is carried on through her loving children, Lisa Hannah Stokes of Grayson, GA, and John Russell "Rusty" Stokes, Jr. of York, SC. She was a cherished grandmother to Katie (Art) Douglas, Sara (Casey) Walters, and Wilder Stokes, and a doting great-grandmother to six great-grandchildren. Her extended family of nieces, nephews, and a host of great friends, including the dedicated staff at Renaissance Senior Living, will deeply miss her thoughtful presence. Jean's professional life was a testament to her caring nature. She dedicated over three decades of her life to nursing, providing comfort and care to countless individuals at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. Her compassion knew no bounds, as she continued her vocation at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont, supporting those at the most vulnerable times of their lives. Even after retiring at the age of 82, Jean's nurturing spirit never waned. A woman of many talents, Jean's passion for cooking was renowned. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, a place where family recipes were not just prepared but passed down through generations. She continued to cook for herself until her final days. Her faith was as much a part of her as her love for her family. While attending the Abbeville Presbyterian Church, Jean's faith-filled life was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her gentle guidance and thoughtful wisdom were the pillars upon which many sought comfort and advice. Jean's life in Savannah Lakes Village was marked by friendship and community engagement until about seven years ago when she transitioned to Renaissance Senior Living in Due West. Her move did not diminish her impact on the community, as she continued to forge meaningful relationships and contribute to the lives of those around her. To describe Jean as thoughtful, faith-filled, and gentle only begins to touch upon the profound influence she had on those she encountered. Her legacy is not merely in the lives she touched but, in the example, she set—a life lived with purpose, grace, and an unending capacity to give. As we bid farewell to Mrs. Jean Hannah Stokes, we celebrate a life beautifully lived. Her memory will continue to be a guiding light to all who were blessed to know her. Jean's story does not end with her passing but lives on in the kindness she showed, the comfort she provided, and the love she shared. May she rest in peace, knowing that her life was a gift to many, and her spirit will forever be cherished.
A memorial service is planned later for Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 3 pm at the Renaissance Senior Living in Due West, SC. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 at 11 am at Ft Jackson National Cemetery near Columbia, SC.
