James Russell Parks

James Russell Parks, affectionately known to many as “Podgy,” passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, South Carolina. He was born on April 25, 1941, in McCormick, South Carolina, to the late Jim and Blanche Wilkie Parks. Growing up in Plum Branch, he was a proud graduate of McCormick High School, where he not only excelled academically but also lettered in football, culminating in his graduation in 1959.

After high school, James enlisted in the Marine Corps. In 1969, he began a long and distinguished career with the Pipe Fitter's Welders Union Local 421 in Charleston. His professional journey took him across the United States, where he worked on a variety of projects including nuclear plants, oil refineries, and chemical factories. He made the most of his skills for decades, often stating with pride that he had worked everywhere but Lincolnton.

James had a passion for dirt track racing, a hobby he shared with his brother, his sons and other family. Together, they built race cars, with his nephew Greg taking the wheel of the #28 car, creating lasting memories that would be cherished by all involved. Beyond racing, he was also known for his exceptional culinary skills, particularly his famous stew, hash, homemade sausage and BBQ sauce, which delighted friends and family alike.

A devoted member of his community, James had been member of Parksville AFM Lodge #199 for over 50 years, Jamil Shrine Temple and Red Fez Shrine Club of McCormick. He was also a member of Parksville Baptist Church, where he attended for many years, although he had recently been attending Plum Branch Baptist Church.

Those who had the pleasure of knowing James will remember him as quite the character with a quick humor. His spirit and kindness touched the lives of many.

He is survived by his wife Vira Newman Parks; daughter, Teresa Parks Wengrow and husband Andy of Lincolnton; sons, James Allen Parks and wife Jenny of Spartanburg, David Earl Parks and wife Cindy of N. Augusta, SC, and Travis Eugene Parks and wife Melanie of Byram, MS; brother Ralph "Demp" Parks of Plum Branch, SC; grandchildren, Nicole Melvin, Andy Ray Wengrow, Jessica Parks Marshall. He was preceded in death by his brothers, George Earl Parks, Donald Wilkie Parks and sister, Betty Parks McConnell.
