James, born in the scenic town of Sylva, North Carolina, on January 30, 1951, to the late Ethan Allen and Lorraine Baldwin Ordway, his early years were spent in the foothills of Western North Carolina, where he learned the art of living from the land, embracing the mountain traditions of fishing and hunting that had been passed down through generations. As the third generation from this picturesque region, James inherited a unique blend of cultures. His mother's New Zealand roots and Scottish heritage instilled in him an appreciation for the Queen's English, while his father's American lineage grounded him in the rugged beauty of the Appalachians. James was an avid marksman, gunsmith, and gun collector, skills that reflected his mountain upbringing and his love for the outdoors. James's journey began with a career at BiLo, which took him as far as Texas, showcasing his adaptability and willingness to embrace new challenges. Later, he found his true calling in the world of residential construction, working alongside his brother, Duncan, at Haven Properties in Suwanee, Georgia. Their partnership was not just built on blood ties but also on a shared vision of creating homes that would stand the test of time. James also excelled as a self-employed contractor, where his dedication to craftsmanship and his sharp eye for detail were highly regarded. Beyond his professional accomplishments, James was a man of diverse interests. He had a passion for classic Thunderbirds. Those who knew James will fondly remember his quick wit and dry sense of humor.
