McDuffie County
Entered into eternal rest James Atticus "Trey" Hutchinson, III, at home, September 25, 2024. Born on December 22, 1969, Trey was a resident of Thomson. After graduating from Briarwood Academy in 1988, Trey attended The University of Georgia to study Journalism and the Liberal Arts. In the tradition of his late grandfather James A. Hutchinson, Jr., the pioneer founder of Brigadier Industries, and his late father W. Robert Hutchinson, Trey was a visionary entrepreneur. Combining his creativity and love of language, he founded the Thomson Times in McDuffie County in 1991 and acquired The Athens Observer, then the state's largest weekly newspaper, earning him recognition in The New York Times. In later years Trey was an active dealer in antique printing, founding, and growing an online market for connoisseurs of antique and vintage maps.
Trey was a great lover of his native South, from the literature of Faulkner and Walker Percy to the first magnolias in bloom each year on his beloved Sweetwater Farm. There he was an avid reader and student of history and a careful curator of his family's distinguished past. His friends will remember his sharp wit, his sense of fun, and his deep compassion.
Trey is preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George B. Jones (Dera), and Mr. and Mrs. James A. Hutchinson, Jr. (Gloria), and his father W. Robert Hutchinson. He is survived by his son, Van Davis Hutchinson; his mother, Susan Jones Komich; his sister, Susan Joy Dallas McElheney; his brother, Albert Hawes Dallas, III, and cousin, Elizabeth Sisson Smith. A private memorial service will be held at Sweetwater Farm later.
