Mr. Jack Willard Bentley, Sr., 82, of Greenwood Church Road, Lincolnton died Thurs., April 2, 2009 at Wills Memorial Hospital, Washington. Graveside services will be held Sat. April 4, at 2 pm at Greenwood Baptist Church Cemetery in Lincoln County with the Revs. Albert Huyck and Ficklen Guin officiating. Mr. Bentley, son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Gladys Bennett Bentley was a retired Poultry and Cattle farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and while serving as Company Commander of the 214th Brigade in the U. S. Army, he was called into active duty at Fort Meade, Maryland during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. He also served as a member on the Lincoln County School Board, the Lincoln County Health Board, Lincoln County ASCS and Rayle EMC. Also, he was a former Post Commander of American Legion Post 194 as well as a member and Deacon of Greenwood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Anna Richards. Survivors include sons and daughters -in-law, Frank Bentley and wife, Lou of Washington; Jack Bentley, Jr and wife Angie of Tignall; and a daughter and son-in-law, Becky Bentley Richards and husband Alan of Lilburn; 4 grandchildren and 1 step granddaughter; 4 great grandchildren, and a sister, Frances Wheeler, of Lincolnton. Pallbearers will be Jim Faust, Bobby Walker, Lee Thaxton, Joe Louis Cullars, Marshall Sherrer and Jack Burns. Members of American Legion Post #194 will serve as honorary pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of American Legion Post 194. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to Greenwood Baptist Church, c/o Patty Hawkes, 4281 Greenwood Church Road, Lincolnton, Ga. 30817.
