Gregory Nelson Montgomery, Sr.
Martinez, Georgia
With hearts broken and eyes filled with tears, we share the passing of Gregory Nelson Montgomery, Sr., 66, of Martinez, Georgia, on January 19, 2025. Born on February 17, 1958, in Kenton County, Kentucky. Gregory's life was a remarkable testament to strength, love and unwavering devotion to those who meant the most to him.
From his early years in Ohio to a lifetime spent in Georgia, Gregory lived with purpose and passion. He was a lifelong Mason and a man of Baptist faith, whose integrity and kindness were the hallmarks of his character. He worked with GIW Industries before retiring as a superintendent from Munroe Consulting, where his tireless work ethic earned him not only respect but enduring friendships. Gregory's life was enriched by simple joys- riding his motorcycle on the open road, fishing in quiet waters, and hunting in the stillness of the woods. But above all else, Gregory's greatest joy was the love he gave to and received from his family and friends. A proud member of the Southern Crusaders, he found a sense of brotherhood and belonging, but his heart always belonged to his family.
By Gregory's side through it all was his loving wife, Darlene Powell, the woman who was not only his partner in life but his steadfast source of strength. From the challenges of work to his courageous battle with cancer, Darlene was his rock, his confidante, and his unwavering caregiver. Her devotion and love carried him through the hardest moments, and in her arms, he found solace and peace. Together, they faced life's greatest trials with grace, faith, and an unbreakable bond that inspired all who knew them.
Gregory was preceded in death by his parents, George Montgomery and Barbara Barnett Montgomery; and his beloved late wife, Valerie Montgomery, whose memory he honored throughout his life.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Darlene, whose strength and love were his anchor; his children, Gregory Montgomery, Jr., Jey Powell and Charlotte Dakin (Jason), who were his pride and joy; and his sisters, Deborah Brock and Kelly Routon, who shared in a lifetime of cherished memories. Gregory's legacy lives on through his twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, each of whom he adored beyond measure.
Among his grandchildren, three held a uniquely special place in his heart: Madison McKinley Powell, Jeffery L. Powell III, and Hunter William Powell. Hunter in particular, shared an unbreakable bond with his "Papaw". Their connection was pure and profound, built on endless love and shared moments that will remain treasured forever.
Gregory also leaves behind his dearest friend and former boss, Tim Munroe, who was more like a brother. Their friendship was a testament to Gregory's capacity for loyalty, kindness, and genuine connection qualities that defined his entire life.
Gregory's life was a light in the lives of everyone he touched. He gave selflessly, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was not just a husband, father, grandfather, and friend- he was the heart of his family and a beacon of strength for those around him.
A celebration of Gregory's extraordinary life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel in Thomson, Georgia.
