Gladys C. Mayes
Thomson, GA- Mrs. Gladys C. Mayes, 91, of Beulah Lane entered into rest September 20, 2014. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard L. Mayes.
Mrs. Mayes was born April 23, 1923 in Illinois to the late James T. Church and the late Birdie Bradcliff Church. She had a talent for art that became evident at an early age. While still a child, she was drawing on every piece of paper that she could find. After graduating the Norman Rockwell Art School by correspondence, she began her very successful art and ceramic business, Magic Lantern Ceramics in Stockbridge, Georgia. She also had a passion for writing poetry and published a book of poetry titled
Thank You Lord.
After retiring, she and her husband, Howard moved to McDuffie County, Georgia. She continued painting until age of 91. The beautiful work of her hands brought joy and pleasure to so many and she always had words of encouragement for everyone. She was a member of Camak Baptist Church and had served as church organist for a while.
She is survived by two sisters, Betty C. Parsons of Huntsville, AL and Mary C. Norris of Camak, GA; nieces and nephews, Jerry Parsons, Christine Walker, Randy Jones, Johnny and Diane Norris, Stella and Bobby Bellamy, Diane and David Adams, Evie and Keith Moon, Jennie Tompkins, James Church, Toni Lou Lucas and several great nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Mayes was preceded in death by a brother, James Church; and sisters, Pauline Bedwell and Esther Heckendorn.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 24, 2014 in the chapel of Beggs Funeral Home, Thomson with Rev. Kevin Stone and Rev. Ella Mae Samuels officiating. Interment will follow in the Camak Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Her family extends a very special heartfelt "Thank You" to her faithful and caring friend, Barbara Hanshew; to her kind and gentle caretaker, Shirley McNair; to her cheerful efficient domestic assistant, Patricia Wright; to her comforter and friend, Rev. Ella Mae Samuels; to all the Alliance Hospice Staff; to Dr. Daryl Wiley and Staff; and all dear relatives and friends.
If so desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes or to the Alzheimer's Association.
