Geraldine Margaret Eggert Doss, affectionately known as Gerry by her loved ones passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia. Born on August 24, 1937, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to the late Floyd and Catherine Metz Eggert, Gerry's journey through life was marked by spirited enthusiasm and a boundless capacity to care for others.
Gerry's formative years were spent in various locales, as her father's military career took the family to Japan, Newfoundland, and eventually Raleigh, North Carolina, where she graduated from high school in 1955. Her passion for nurturing others led her to the noble profession of nursing, and she proudly graduated from Rex Nursing School as a Registered Nurse in 1958. Love blossomed when her father introduced her to Earnest Doss, a young soldier under his command. The couple married on July 24, 1961, in Ft Knox, Kentucky, setting the foundation for a life filled with adventure and companionship. During Earnest's military service, Gerry embraced life in North Dakota and Germany, where her sons, Ernie and Robert, were born. The family eventually settled in Augusta, Georgia, where Gerry's career in nursing flourished. As a floor nurse and later head nurse in the labor and delivery department at St. Joseph Hospital, she was instrumental in introducing innovative practices, including the use of Terbutaline to prevent premature births. Her dedication to her profession continued as she served as head nurse for Dr. Barbara Powell and later transitioned to roles in home health care until her retirement in 2013, after a commendable 55-year tenure in nursing. Retirement did not slow Gerry down; instead, it offered her the opportunity to pursue her passion for antique and flea market exploration alongside her husband and Dr. Powell. Their weekends were eagerly anticipated events, highlighted by the thrill of the hunt for glassware, silverware, and her favorite Wexford lead crystal. Gerry's pursuit of antiques was not merely a hobby; it was a shared adventure that often took precedence over birthdays and other special occasions. Gerry's zest for life extended beyond antiquing. She was an active member of the Red Hat Society, enjoyed games with her Bridge Club friends, and sang joyfully in the choir at Trinity On The Hill. Her nurturing spirit never waned as she cared for a neighbor in need and ultimately became Dr. Powell's caregiver, offering comfort and companionship until her final days. Gerry's love for her family was immeasurable. She is survived by her sons, Ernie Doss and his wife Mandy of Lincolnton, and Robert Doss of Macon; her sister, Colleen Macbeth of Mandan, North Dakota; her grandchildren, Melissa Ewest, Jonathan Doss, Hillary McAlister, Daniel Doss, and Robert Matthew Doss; and her 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ernie and sisters Yvonne and Daphne. Gerry's life was an inspiring tapestry of caring and commitment, woven with threads of joy and selflessness. Her memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who were fortunate to have been touched by her warmth and generosity. As we bid farewell to Geraldine Margaret Eggert Doss, we celebrate a life well-lived, a life that truly made a difference in the world.
