William Gerald Martin passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, at the Hodges SC home of his daughter, Debbie. Born on March 3, 1939, in Abbeville, SC, Gerald's life was an ongoing testament to the love, laughter and generosity he brought into the world.
Gerald was the cherished husband of Patricia N. Martin, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life focused on family and filled with joy. He was a loving father and source of great strength and guidance to his daughters, Debbie Powell (Kevin) and Robin Staub (TL). Gerald's legacy continues on through his grandsons, Nick Powell (Kaylie), Tyler Staub (Hannah), Matthew Staub (Mary Kathryn), and his granddaughter, Samantha Powell, as well as his 13 great-grandchildren. Gerald was preceded in death by his stillborn daughter, Ronda Kaye Martin, his parents, Herbert Martin and Ruth Martin Monroe, his sisters, Venice Shrimp and Trevor Baker and his brother, Carroll Martin.
A man of great faith, Gerald was a long-standing member of Augusta Highway Baptist Church in Greenwood, SC. Professionally, Gerald was co-owner of B & P Auto Parts, Inc. in Greenwood, SC, where he dedicated 35 years of outstanding service and expertise. His strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were greatly admired by all who knew him. Gerald's passions extended beyond work and church. He had a zest for life that was contagious.
His love for drag racing, hunting and fishing were well-known and he spent many happy hours pursuing these hobbies. The family farm wasn't just a place of business but a sanctuary where he expertly raised cattle and chickens and where laughter often filled the air as he lovingly shared his great knowledge and passion for the farm, and for nature, in general, with his family and friends. Gerald will always be remembered as generous, loving and funny. His sense of humor was a gift that he shared freely, bringing smiles to the faces of all those around him. He was a man who loved deeply and who was deeply loved, in return. He will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 3 pm, at Goshen Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, in the church sanctuary. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
