George Odis Hughes
Thomson, GA –Mr. George Odis Hughes, 92, of Beechwood Drive entered into rest November 12, 2015 at University Hospital-McDuffie.
Mr. Hughes was born in Glascock County, Georgia and was one of eleven children born to the late David Hughes and the late Annie Mae Dismuke Hughes. At an early age Mr. Hughes joined Fellowship Baptist Church in Gibson.
In his twenties, Mr. Hughes moved to Thomson, GA where he became founder and owner of Hughes Furniture and Mattress Gallery with over 65 years of service. Mr. Hughes was very active in Thomson and McDuffie County and he previously served as a City Councilman, on the Downtown Development Authority and the Industrial Development Board. He was currently serving as Chairman of the Department of Family and Children Services Advisory Board. He was one of the founding Directors of McDuffie Bank and Trust and was Director Emeritus of State Bank and Trust. Mr. Hughes was a faithful and devoted member of First Baptist Church, Thomson, and the Men's Bible Class. He served as former Training Union Leader and on many church committees in years past. He was also a Mason and Shriner. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sara Neal Hughes.
Survivors include his daughters, Sandra Ann Hughes and husband, Don Clauson of Martinez, GA, Mary Linda Hughes; brother, Gene Hughes and wife, Jane; sister in law, Elizabeth Hughes all of Thomson; and grandchildren, Caleb Clauson-Hughes, Sara Blackmon- Hughes, Grace Blackmon-Hughes and Jimmy Blackmon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 14, 2015 at First Baptist Church, Thomson with Rev. David Lambert officiating. Interment will follow at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be: David Everson, David Hughes, Mark Hughes, Carroll Hughes, Bob Hughes and Caleb Clauson-Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Dunaway and members of the Men's Bible Class.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Jamie Lemley and his staff as well as Mr. Hughes' caregivers, Diane, Lucille, Regina, John, Rutha Mae, Vece and Martha for their exceptional care.
It is the family's request that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 1205, Thomson, GA 30824. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Beggs Funeral Home, 799 Cobbham Rd., Thomson, Georgia is in charge.
