Geneva M. Leverett

Geneva Morriss Leverett, 92, died peacefully with her family at her bedside on October 14, 2014 in Greenwood, South Carolina.  She was the daughter of the late Lillie Mae and Charles Grover Morriss.

Born in Buford, Georgia, she attended Norcross High School and was a violinist in the Junior Symphony of Atlanta.   She received a Bachelors degree in Home Economics from Georgia State College for Women in 1942.  Shortly thereafter, she moved to Lincoln County, began her teaching career, and married George Cleveland Leverett, Jr. She continued her career as a substitute teacher in various subjects and grades while raising her children.

Mrs. Leverett was very active in Lincolnton United Methodist Church for many years and until her death was the church's oldest member. She was a charter member of the Candler Woman's Circle. She was a Methodist Youth Fellowship  leader and regularly cooked and served church meals whenever needed. She later became a licensed underwriter and managed the family insurance business in Lincolnton.

An accomplished baker and seamstress, she was a swimming instructor and also a Girl Scout Leader.  She was an avid bridge player, and also enjoyed painting china.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, George C. Leverett, III; and two brothers: Grover Wendell Morriss and Paul Vernon Morriss.

Survivors include a brother; Charles George Morriss of Lilburn, Georgia; her three daughters: Marilyn L. Davis of Columbia, South Carolina; Susan L. Hawkins and her husband, William R. Hawkins, of Atlanta, Georgia; Nancy L. May and her husband, Jefferson J. May of Greenwood, South Carolina; daughter-in-law, Wendy M. Leverett, of Lincolnton; her grandchildren: Ronald G. Bailey, Jr.,  and friend Myranda R. Emrich of Columbia, South Carolina; W. Russell Hawkins and his wife, Brooke C. Hawkins, and their children: Jayden William Griswold and Maddox John Griswold of Buford, Georgia; Whitney L. Poucher and her husband E. Zachary Poucher, and son Leverett George Poucher, of North Augusta, South Carolina; Elizabeth J. Hawkins, of Atlanta; R. Clayton Lovelady, Jr.; of Greenwood, South Carolina; Callie M. Bibb and her son Levi W. Moon of Lincolnton, Georgia; Cristin M. Cooper and her husband T. Zachary Cooper of Flat Rock, North Carolina and  their daughter Hayden May Cooper; G. Cuylor Leverett of Evans, Georgia and Kathryn L. Towns and her husband, Kirby, of Evans, Georgia and their daughters,  Lovett and Bonnie Kate Towns; and a special friend; Julia Mae Leverett.

The following family members will serve as pallbearers:

Ronald G. Bailey, Jr., W. Russell Hawkins, E. Zachary Poucher, R. Clayton Lovelady, Jr.,  Steven A. Dawkins and Clifford G. Lunceford.

The family will receive visitors at Beggs Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 15 th from 6 -8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Lincolnton United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 16 th at 11 a.m.  Interment will follow at Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Lincolnton United Methodist Church, 202 Peachtree Street, Lincolnton, Georgia, 30817.
