Glenda Gail Newsome, affectionately known as Gail to her friends and family, passed away at her home in Thomson, Georgia, on the 28th of November, 2025, following a battle with cancer. Born on October 1, 1952, Gail's resilience and nurturing spirit were evident from her earliest years. At just four years old, she assumed the role of caregiver to her infant sister after their mother's departure and their father's subsequent illness. Despite these early hardships, and many hardships throughout her life including being separated from her first child, losing her husband Virgil Haywood when their infant son, T.H. was only three years old and later losing her husband James Newsome to cancer in 2003. Gail's strength and determination only grew, becoming a beacon of hope and support for many throughout her life. Gail's life was a testament to her unyielding commitment to her community. Her career was multifaceted and impactful, from assisting her late husband, James, at Beggs Funeral Home to her 15 years as an inspector at SRS. Gail's dedication to public service shone brightly as she took on the roles of Code Enforcement Official and the Director of Animal Services for the county. Her professional contributions were recognized by her colleagues across the state, particularly through her involvement in the GACE association. Beyond her official capacities, Gail's generosity knew no bounds. She quietly supported countless individuals in need, providing shelter, food, and transportation without ever seeking accolades or recognition. Her kindness extended well beyond her professional life, touching the lives of those around her in profound and lasting ways. Gail's personal life was filled with joy and the love of her family. She cherished her role as a caregiver, a passion that was ignited during her time as a candy striper in high school. Her love for cooking and baking brought warmth and delight to those she cherished, and her adventurous spirit was captured in memories of skydiving with friends.
She is survived by her sister, Faye Redfern; her son, Jeff McGahee and his wife Ginger of Appling; her grandchildren, Maycie McGahee and Morgan M. Lonergan, and her husband Jackson Lonergan; her niece, Scarlett Grimes and her husband Kevin; her great-nieces and nephews Blake and Serenity; and a host of special friends, including Angie Newsome and her grandchild, who lovingly knew Gail as "Gannie." She was also preceded in death by her son Thomas "T.H." Haywood who was her pride and joy.
