Evelyn Cartledge Drinkard, a beacon of love and faith, passed away
peacefully on July 9, 2024, at Lake Crossing Health Care in Appling, Georgia.
Born on April 8, 1927, in Lincolnton, Georgia, Evelyn's life was a testament to
her unwavering kindness and her commitment to her community and family.
Evelyn was the heart of her family, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-
grandmother. She is survived by her sons, Eddie Drinkard and his wife Susan
of Athens, Roy Drinkard of Athens, James Drinkard and his wife Lynnly of
Commerce; her cherished grandchildren, Chris, Chad, Sara, Casey, and Ann
Drinkard; and her great-grandchildren, Susanna, Daniel, Mary Beth, Lexi, and
McKenzie Drinkard. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she
showered them with the same love and attention that she gave to every
aspect of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Drinkard
and her sister, Marguerite "Mickey" Johnson.
Growing up in the Loco Community, where her mother operated the local
telephone switchboard from the home, Evelyn joined the Loco Baptist Church
at an early age, laying the foundation for a lifetime of faith and service. She
graduated from Lincolnton High School in 1944. A few years later, on July 10, 1947,
she married Edwin Drinkard. In 1960, they moved from the city to a new home
on Augusta Highway where they owned and operated Evergreen Egg and Poultry.
Evelyn's role as the bookkeeper was pivotal in their success.
They also cultivated a tradition that touched every household in
Lincolnton—growing watermelons and pumpkins, ensuring that every family
had a pumpkin to celebrate the Fall season.
Her talents extended beyond her business acumen. Evelyn was an expert
china painter, creating beautiful plates, pitchers, and trivets that became
cherished heirlooms. She also crafted quilts and baby blankets for new
arrivals in the community, delivering them with love and care. Her generosity
and creativity were boundless.
Evelyn's commitment to education and her community was evident in her role
as the bookkeeper secretary at Lincoln County Elementary School from the
Fall of 1977 until the end of the 1994 school term. Colleagues remember her
not only as an exceptional secretary but as a treasured friend whose presence
brightened the school.
A longtime member and volunteer at Lincolnton Baptist Church, Evelyn kept
attendance records for many years. Her dedication to her faith and her church
was unwavering, and she found joy in serving others.
Evelyn's passion for life was evident in her love for Lincoln County Red Devil
football. She was a familiar face at games, her spirit undeterred by distance or
cold weather
Living a full life, Evelyn maintained her independence well into her later years,
residing at home a few years ago. She was an avid reader of the Lincoln
Journal, keeping herself informed about the happenings in her beloved
community. Even after she stopped driving at around the age of 90, she and
her caregivers would traverse the local roads, visiting friends and keeping up
with the lives of those she had watched grow over the years.
Evelyn Cartledge Drinkard will be remembered as a loving, kind, and faith-
filled woman. Her legacy is one of warmth, generosity, and unwavering
support for her family and community. She touched the lives of many and
leaves behind a tapestry of memories that will be cherished by all who knew
her.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024 a 11 a.m. at
Lincolnton Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Lincolnton City
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior the service in the church social hall.
