Elizabeth Green Sheperd

Betty, as she liked to called, was a home economics teacher when she met Olen in 1941, another teacher at her school in Poland, Ohio. They married in December of 1941 and shortly after he went off to war. Betty spent over 58 years as the wife of a career officer and civil servant in the Air Force and raised three children. She earned a Master of Arts in Education from Case-Western Reserve College and taught home economics during several of the military assignments. Betty was a great cook and many happy memories were spent around the family dinner table eating full course meals with desert. Betty loved her grandchildren and also enjoyed reading books. She was a quiet person, but feisty in nature, generous to others, and spent a lot of time selecting thoughtful gifts for her family on their birthdays and Christmas. Betty was a Christian who loved cats, wild birds, gardening, beautiful things, playing bridge, the beach, and in her younger days, travels around the world. She especially loved the Orient. When she was in her 70s, she and Olen went to Egypt and she was on her hands and knees crawling through passages in the pyramids. Her children were with her when she passed and how fitting it was to occur on Mother's Day. Betty was preceded in death by parents, John N. and Mary Judd Green, and sister, Virginia Green. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Olen; son James and wife Linda of Appling; son Jonathan and wife Kathleen of Shalimar, FL; daughter Jacquelyn Doster and husband Ken of Lincolnton; three grandchildren, Dr. James Sheperd, Christina Sheperd, and Brittany Doster; two step grandchildren, Dr. R. John Stukey and Jeff Stukey; and three step great-grandchildren, Meri Doughten, Angela Stukey, and Samuel Stukey.
