Edith Peeler Beckum

Edith Yvonne Peeler Beckum lived a beautiful life until the day she moved to heaven on May 14, 2021. She became the first-born child of Alma Danner Peeler and Lawrence Sidney Peeler on May 22, 1936. She was delivered by her grandmother Maggie Hastings Peeler in the Double Branches community. Shortly after, they moved to "the mountain" community where she had a simple, southern childhood. She had three siblings, one sister and two brothers, that filled her youth with joyful memories. She also had a little brother that was stillborn but she spoke of him often. Elsie, Mac, and Paul were the first friends she ever had. Although her parents, Elsie and Paul preceded Edith in death, she spoke of them often. Her compassionate spirit was born as she helped care for her siblings. She grew up on a farm and one of her favorite memories was laying in the cotton fields with her siblings as the bright sunshine beamed on her skin while they were supposed to be working. She went to Five-Points school until fourth grade when she began attending school Lincoln County High School. Edith blossomed into a beautiful young lady in her youth and began to make many friends. She graduated from Lincoln County high school in 1954. Edith met the love of her life, Romie Hewitt Beckum at a picnic that he attended with a friend. They dated for a few years, however, he always told the story that when he saw Edith at a community dance, he leaned over to this best friend and said "I'm going to marry that girl one day" the first day he saw her. They got married in 1958 at Woodland Baptist Church in Wrens, Ga. where they began the journey of life. After a few years, they relocated to Marietta, Ga for 1 year and Ft. Walton Beach, Florida for 2 years while Romie served in the Air Force as a fireman then returned to Wrens. After they returned, Edith had her first and only child, Diane Michelle Beckum, in 1969. The Lord then lead them back to her home town of Lincolnton in 1970. She and Romie raised their family at Greenwood Baptist Church. She worked at the Oxford Industries for 30 years as a final inspector. She was very active in the community and loved helping others in any way she could. In 1993, she gained a son when Diane married Scott Wayne Dekreon. Together they gave her two grandchildren that she loved more than anything. Michael Romie was born in 1995 and Maggie Grace in 1998. Her family was the center of her life until her last day. This year Michael married Alli Etheridge and Edith was very excited each time she remembered that Michael was marrying the "Little Double Branches girl".

Edith had a love for many things in life. Her greatest love was for the Lord, then her family, and then her flowers. At the age of eighty-four years old, she left this world surrounded by the love of her life and family members to meet her Jesus, baby brother, and so many others who have gone on before her. Her husband, daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren will miss her greatly and keep her memory close for the rest of their lives.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 4pm at Greenwood Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Sunday beginning at 3pm until the hour of the service in the church sanctuary.
