Duncan Ordway

Mr. Ian Duncan Ordway, 70, of Sutton Road, known affectionately as Duncan to his friends and family, passed away on June 6, 2025, in Tallahassee, Florida. Son of the late Ethan Allen and Lorraine Baldwin Ordway, he was born on October 20, 1954, in Clayton, Georgia. Duncan grew up in the scenic landscapes of the Western North Carolina mountains, where he developed a lifelong love for the great outdoors. His passion for hunting, fishing, and woodworking began in the verdant woods and streams of his childhood and stayed with him throughout his life. After graduating from high school in Franklin, North Carolina, Duncan answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy. His time in the service instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried into his civilian life. Upon returning to civilian life, Duncan found his calling as a carpenter. He spent over 20 years perfecting his trade with John W. Spratlin and Son Construction, where his skillful hands and keen eye for detail were highly valued as job superintendent.  Duncan was the epitome of the phrase "never sit down," always busy doing something. He was proud of his work and one of his greatest accomplishments in construction was rebuilding the Hancock County Courthouse after it burned. He enjoyed being an integral part in restoring it to its original glamour. Duncan's friendly nature and handy skills made him a beloved figure in his community. He always spoke his mind and whatever came up, came out! What you saw was exactly what you got!

He is survived by his wife, Glenda Ledford Ordway; sons, Joseph Ordway, Jamie McCall, Johnny McCall, and his daughter, Margaret McCall; brothers, James and Ethan Allen "Buz" Ordway, and sisters, Charlotte Cabe and Louise Ordway; and seven grandchildren. The family is also comforted by the thought of Duncan's legacy continuing with the arrival of a great-grandchild due in August. Duncan's life was a testament to the power of hard work, the importance of family, and the joy of living each day to the fullest. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the indelible mark he has left on the hearts of all who knew him. Mr. Ian Duncan Ordway's memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared, the projects built, and the love he gave so freely. His life was well-lived, and he will be deeply missed.
